When Kaylyn received her Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) diagnosis on October 16, 2014, she was just 11 years old, and her family was suddenly facing a world of unknowns. The journey was daunting, marked by daily injections, glucose monitoring, and a steep learning curve in managing T1D. By 2015, Kaylyn transitioned to an insulin pump, adapting to a new lifestyle while navigating the challenges of growing up with T1D. Now, as she celebrates her 10-year “Diaversary,” Kaylyn reflects on a decade of resilience and growth.

A pivotal source of support for Kaylyn has been Camp Conrad Chinnock, a place where she found both community and confidence. For Kaylyn and her family, the camp has been more than just a summer retreat; it’s been a lifeline. Surrounded by peers who also manage Type 1 Diabetes, Kaylyn was able to freely discuss her struggles and triumphs without needing to explain herself, creating a sense of belonging that’s rare outside of camp. Camp Conrad’s programming, from practical diabetes management workshops to group activities, taught Kaylyn valuable life skills and boosted her self-reliance. The camp kept her mom, Cassie, updated and involved, easing her initial concerns and building trust. Beyond diabetes management, Camp Conrad provided activities that brought fun, confidence, and friendship into Kaylyn’s life, allowing her to see that she isn’t alone on this journey. Through these experiences, Kaylyn gained a deeper understanding of her condition and developed a network of friends and mentors who continue to support her.

CAN YOU HELP CHANGE THE STATISTICS?

    Kaylyn & Chris McFayden (2014)

    STATISTICS

On average, 40,000+ people are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes every year.

    FACTS

Type 1 Diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body mistakenly attacks itself that results in destroying pancreas cells that produce insulin–a hormone that enables blood sugar to enter the body’s cells and become energy to be used by the body. Without insulin, blood sugar is unable to build up the bloodstream.

    STRUGGLE OF DIABETES

There is currently no cure for T1D. Medical treatments cost about $237 billion on a national scale. Children with T1D endure regular blood sugar tests, shots, and adherence to strict dietary regulations, all while navigating feelings of stigmatization and isolation.
